What’s Next for Powhatan Posies? Reflecting on Season Two and Looking to Season Three
Last year I was telling a fellow flower farming/florist friend (Kathy York, Scarborough Farms in SoMD) that I was unsure what direction to go in following our first season. You-Pick was a great way to ease into flower farming and selling, to meet members of the community and to gauge the interest in local flowers here in King George. Still, I was left with SO MANY flowers and needed to add another sales channel. Kathy advised the next logical move for Season Two would be to sell at the local Farmer’s Market. At first I wondered would I have enough flowers to meet a weekly demand – sure enough the answer was yes but little did I know in what ways this advice would enrich not only Powhatan Posies (PP) as a business but also my co-farmer and I as King George community members. One could say we and our business have both blossomed!
The King George Farmer’s Market (KGFM) proved to be a weekly commitment we have been eager to meet. I thought I would be selling flower bouquet bunches only with a few jar arrangements from time to time. Wrong! Our excellent veg vendors sell flower bunches, and beautiful ones at that, so my jar arrangements became the focus and as a result, very popular sellers. As the flower varieties changed weekly depending on what was growing at the time, two things did not: First, the camaraderie of the vendors. At KGFM, the vendors are truly a community within a community. We laughed, poked fun, supported and sweated together (remember those high 90+ degree days – yeah, pretty hot on that black asphalt!).
Second, and truly most importantly was YOU, the customer. It didn’t take long before we had a faithful following stopping by to purchase weekly arrangements or just to say “Hi”. Easily, our most favorite part of the market! We have gotten to meet so many kind, generous and supportive flower lovers from the KG community and many have also ventured out to the farm for you-pick days. One thing leads to another so often and soon we were also selling personalized DIY packages, and meeting small event and occasion orders. AMAZING!
* Seriously I need to make a shout out for ALL the customers who supplied us with jars as part of the PP jar program. Astounding but true, we grew, harvested and arranged enough flowers to make over 750 arrangements over the course of the season and never ONCE had to purchase jars! Thank you! Thank you!
Well, and lot’s more discussion of this, what’s next for PP in Season 3? For sure workshops, both at the Market and on site at the farm, and a flower subscription service. However, first comes putting the rows to bed for the winter. Then sleep (ah!). Maybe house cleaning (maybe). Definitely planning. Thank you Kathy for the excellent market advice, fellow KGFM vendors for all the support and laughs and finally, to the best flower loving customers co-farmer and I could ask for!
Until KGFM ’25!
Love, Mike and Lynette
