We Can Do This – Wedding Flowers for the DIY’r

Meet Savannah and Chris. To say I love the can-do attitude and vision of these two lovebirds is definitely an understatement. I met them both back in early October at the King George Fall Festival where we had pumpkins and dried flowers for sale and were definitely trending towards holiday flowers and decor.  Savannah asked me the magical question, “Do you grow dahlias? I love them and we are getting married in October.” Okay, admittedly, no more need be said. Full-stop, Powhatan Posies dahlia discussion ensued. My favorite!

Our dahlia season began right on schedule in mid-September and continued well into November due to an extended season of warm temperatures and a very late hard frost. It was an outstanding dahlia season and perfect for Savannah and Chris who were interested in buying most colors for their October wedding. I had warned them of two scenarios: One, a sudden hard frost and the dahlias would be toast and two, I was expecting to travel out of state at any time to visit an ailing family member so they may have to harvest (and would need to condition) the dahlias on their own.  Again, Savannah and Chris’ can-do attitude and vision kicked in and they said they understood and asked could I teach them how to pick and condition the dahlias themselves. Love them. So impressed we were that access to all of Powhatan Posies flowers was given!

Oh, and did I mention, the wedding was in West Virginia so transportation would be an issue?  Fortunately, the first scenario didn’t happen, the second did and Savannah and Chris were on their own. Now harvesting and conditioning dahlias is not difficult really, but there are some tricks to make sure they are fresh for the big day. The temps on the day of harvesting were still quite warm. No problem, these two DIY’rs harvested and conditioned beautifully, kept the blooms cool and transformed them into gorgeous wedding flowers. See their lovely bouquets below!

Really, nothing makes us more pleased than to be a part of something so beautiful. Prouder still we were of Savannah and Chris for having the vision and confidence to take on all aspects of getting those dahlias to their wedding. Never be afraid to ask and never be afraid to try to have what you love. An excellent lesson to be learned.

Powhatan Posies wishes our newlyweds Savannah and Chris all the joy and happiness in the world.

Happy first married Valentine’s Day to you both! ❤️
